I don't see that there's any particular connection in the first place. People have self-imposed codes of behaviour because they're human, not because they're religious. It's an observable fact that the least religious societies on the planet also tend to be the most civilised and peaceful and enlightened. So, we might as well ask how we prevent theism from becoming nihilism.

By understanding that "nothing" cannot exist logically. Everything is composed of SOMETHING... you might want to take a peek at Buddhist philosophy and some of the Eastern philosophies like Taoism and such... it might help you regain a notch of balance, if not all of it. You have to understand... theism is dualistic philosophy in nature... the "all or nothing", "us vs. them", "bad vs. good", so on and so forth... but such extremes don't really exist in anything, there IS a middle way, Eastern philosophy, which existed before Christianity and such might be of assistance.
