Instead of "This is dept xyz, abc speaking, how can I help you today, may I have your name please?"

It's soo annoying to listen to and almost makes me want to hang up.

To be professional. This way, without wondering if you happened to call the right place, you will know. Plus u will know the name of the person, incase u need to call again and ask for this person who helped u before...or for information & introduction sake. How may I help you....is just something that says the business is ready to help you. It's graciousness. And asking for your name, lets them have the information so that if they have to send ur call to somebody, they can use your name. u could be the company CEO who knows? It's always good to know the caller's name. I know it needs a lil patience to hear all that sometimes...lol I know where u r coming from....but businesses just want to do it right.

"This is dept. X" is to reaffirm where you are calling.
"XX speaking" to be formal
"How may I help you" because you called for a reason.
"May I have your name?" in order to look up any info for you.

If "Hello" was all we got, business could not get done in a timely and orderly fasion.

Thank you, and have a nice day.
