You need to figure out what type of skiing you are going to be doing. Different brands make certain types of skis better than others. I think K2 makes great twin tip/park skis while I tend to prefer Salomon for all mountain skiing. My last great powder day I strapped on some fat Nordicas that were really great. Decide what you want to ski most and tailor your skis to your desires. Most of all, I would talk to employees on a mountain or a ski rental shop. For the most part they will give you good, unbiased info.

Definately Atomic for racing. Blizzard for reletively cheap nice all mountain skis, or very expensive high quality all mountain skis if you prefer, probably another brand like Rossignol for value. Maybe Volkl, I don't know much about that kind of ski

Elan makes some excellent skis and unless you are an expert most are moderately priced. Check out some late season ski sales or check out last year's Elan models for some solid "deals" that are usually available at most ski shops.
