United Kingdom is the name of the country (Great Britain is acceptable), but England is not a country. It's a region within the country. Why do people always say England is a country?

England is to the United Kindgdom like California is the the United States. No one would answer "What country do you want to go to?" with "California".

To those who say "England IS a country", why are all the questions about England listed under the "United Kingdom" section RIGHT HERE ON YAHOO? If it were a country, it would have its own category, like India, Germany, Brazil, etc.

(to the person who says MY forefathers raided and pillaged other lands: what are YOU TALKING ABOUT?! The United Kingdom was "raiding and pillaging" other countries long before "my country", which btw you don't even know where I live.

Of corse England is a country. We have English laws, Scottish laws and Welsh laws come under England (at the moment).
All these are seperate countries but just happen to be on the same island.
So England IS a country and Great Britain is a name for ALL the countries for the British Isles.
You try telling a Welsh man he's British or a Scotsman he's British and they will tell you they are Welsh first and a Scotsman first BEFORE they are British, and never English!
**
And to your additional notes, England is classed under the United Kingdom because the 3 kingdoms (England, Scotland and Wales) are UNITED. The Queen rules them. So we are one united kingdom but seperate countries.
If you went into Scotland and tried to use English law, you wouldn't get very far, because it is a different judicial system for a start (a totally different countries law).

If you want to be so picky then please call the country by its true name
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
England has existed as a unified entity since the 10th century; the union between England and Wales, begun in 1284 with the Statute of Rhuddlan, was not formalized until 1536 with an Act of Union.
In another Act of Union in 1707, England and Scotland agreed to permanently join as Great Britain; the legislative union of Great Britain and Ireland was implemented in 1801, with the adoption of the name the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
The Anglo-Irish treaty of 1921 formalized a partition of Ireland; six northern Irish counties remained part of the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland and the current name of the country, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was adopted in 1927.
England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (though not as much) are still recognised as countries in their own right. The International Power is that of all the countries presenting a united front.
The Old Boroughs used to be little kingdoms with their own ruling nobility. These eventually joined together and became England which has existed ever since.

England is a country..
California to the USA... Is like... Somerset is to England.
We are a country.
The same as Tunisia is a COUNTRY in Africa.
The same as Thailand is a COUNTRY in Asia.
England is a COUNTRY in the UK/ Great Britain.
As for the bit down the side..?... Time saving?? I don't ... Americans always say people from England are British, rather than English...
Would you rather have a seperate section for Wales... and Scotland... And N.Ireland..
Hell... why not have EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY in the world listed...!!!
That would be fun to flick through...!
Our COUNTRY is listed under it's union.

Because for the majority of its history, England was the whole country. It is also unusual in today's world for the major land mass of a country to not be named for the country.
