I just began an allergy treatment for my Akita, I was wondering if I could have him cut short for the approaching summer if this might help the symptoms.

I agree with the person that said their fur is insulation fro mthe cold AND the heat. My grandmother had a chow-chow, and had him shaved one summer. NEVER did it again. The dog was SO hot ALL summer and got a sunburn. Why dont you ask a vet first?

Unless one of the following aplies then I don't see any harm in it:

You live in an extremely cold climate (not above 50 f in the summer)
You are planning on using him as a show dog
Or There is some medical reason not to do it.

Otherwise make sure you have a dog groomer do it. Akita fur is extremely thick and you will wind up breaking your clippers if you do it at home, not to mention it is a lot of fur.

take him to the vet. They can cut his hair just short enough to keep him short, but not so much that could make his skin sensitive to wind or rain, if kept outside

You do realize that a dog's coat is their insulation from the heat and protection from the sun. Dogs, like people, can and do get sunburned.

***********NO!!!!*************
REALLY STUPID/BAD idea!

You want to add OVERHEATING *&* SUNBURN to it's problems?? Besides RUINING the coat PERMANENTLY?
DON'T be an idiot!
duh
