You should try to understand why your mother feels the way that she does about having a dog. Here's a couple of possible reasons why you mother doesn't want a pup/dog in her house

-They can be expensive. Dog food, vet bills, boarding while you're away (it was going to cost over $250 to board my dog for a week while I was away on a cruise). The bigger the dog, the bigger the bill.

-Most dogs shed. It's a cleaning nightmere for the neat freak.

-Raising a puppy is a job that is best done by someone who is home 24/7 and who can devote that time at home mostly with the puppy. If you're at school for 7 hours a day, who's going to let the puppy out numerous times to potty train him? Plus, puppies can be very destructive when not supervised ALL the time...that's hard for even the best of dog owners to achieve!

-You have to have a good understanding about training and socializing. Those who don't know anything about training and socialization, and those who don't consult with a dog trainer will surely have a messed up dog for life.

There's a lot that needs to go into raising a puppy! It sounds like your mother either A) knows this or B) doesn't choose to have her home possibly destroyed.

List your reasons for having a dog, and how you plan to make up for all the negatives that I presented to you. Have a serious talk with your mom to find out exactly why she feels this way and explain to her your list/reasons. Keep the discussion civil. Good luck!!! I think all kids should grow up with a dog!

When my niece Sophie really REALLy wanted a puppy, she told her mom (my sister) all the great things she would learn by taking care of a dog--responsability, pride, good values,...etc. Puppies also stimulate kids, they become happier and less stressed. Soph also told my sister that--if she got her a puppy--Sophie would do better on her exams, get more friends, etc. because she had a dog. Try convincing your mom. :) Good luck!

There's not much that you can really say. If she doesn't want one, she doesn't and it's her house. You may just have to wait until you're on your own. We had kids when I was growing up but when my parents got divorced, my mom didn't want dogs in the house. I had to wait until my husband and I were married to get one. Whoever owns the house makes the rules.
