What format did your instructor specify? There are subtle but significant differences amoung the various style manuals: Modern Language Association; American Psychological Association; Chicago; Turiban, which is close to the Chicago style. And there are others for specific scientific or scholarly disciplines.

It depends if you are doing MLA or Turabian. MLA for English papers and Turabian for history papers.
