I'm going to China this summer, and I was wondering if I could bring my cigarettes with me.

You can only bring the maximum allowed under customs regulations, which is generally 200 cigarettes. The suggestion to quit smoking is a good one but a personal choice. If you still want to smoke, why don't you just try some Chinese brands, whether you chose the most expensive (Panda in the yellow box, about 70 to 80 rmb, or the cheapest, Beijing at about 3 rmb, they will more or less taste and smell the same and end up in smoke :). American brands like Marlboro and others are also pretty cheap (less than 15 rmb) but I don't know if they are the same as those found in the USA, as I am not a smoker myself.

You can bring your own, up to, if I remember correctly 400 cigarettes for your use or for gifts. More and you have to pay a duty. But there is no need. In most cities it requires major effort not to be breathing somebody elses cigarette. Cigarettes are widely available there so unless your addicted to a particular brand that you KNOW is not available you can purchase them there probably cheaper. After all China does not have rules protecting public health yet and the cigarette companies are eager to garner as many new addicts as possible. The health costs of cigarette smoking in China must be tremendous.

World over Cigarette is a Big Tax Earner. Hence there will be restrictions in bringing in from another country. Many allow small quantity which can be found from the baggage allowances.
