Do any of you have any qualifications in Earth sciences or indeed any of you studied this? I'm just curious is all, as to why you believe that the Earth is so young, I mean no offence, truly

Mr Math, I was clearly addressing the young Earth believers, that is, those persons that believe that the Earth is relatively young compared with scientific date that dates the Earth to roughly 4.5 billion years old
Is that a group of people? Perhaps so, in the sense that a large number of people believe this
anymore questions?

Adam, carbon dating is useful for dating organic remanants less than 60,000 years old.....further than that, we use radioactive isotopes with much longer half-lives such as uranium...
do you understand radiometric dating?

Michael, using the flood "theory" and I use theory in the everyday sense of the word, to calculate the age of the Earth is by far, the worst scientific method there could every be, considering, most Christians, cannot even agree whether the flood was a global or local phenonemon, and also considering the fact there is is absolutely no geological evidence supporting a global flood theory! No offence, just stating a fact

I'd just like to add, yes you're right, there's nothing to work from, or perhaps there is! Thats where radiometric dating comes in...if you studied it, you'd know what I meant

According to neutral polls of scientists in the earth sciences and in biology, over 99.9% of all earth scientists and biologists are not creationists, and probably even fewer are Young Earth creationists. (In the U.S., this figure is slightly lower: only 99.87% of earth scientists and biologists are non-creationists.) So, it goes without saying, the odds of one of that .1% happening to be active on this board is exceedingly low.

I feel that there are several different misconceptions about the time date thing. For one I feel when God created the earth He done with his idea of days and years not ours. I also do truly believe God placed Adam and Eve upon the earth approx. 6000 years ago. That however does not include say that there were not other types of upright animals or people here before or at the same time. I also would not say that the earth isn't just 6000 years old, if God wanted he could make the earth and all that was upon it in a day, after all some one who could bring the dead back to life why couldn't he do something in fast forward. But good luck on your quest to find the truth for your self. I have come to the conclusion that it does not matter much to me which way he done it. I just know he did do it.

I am a young earth believer. I do not have an education in geology, or archeology, or know anything about the chemistry behind carbon dating. For the last couple of years I actually thought it was what charcoal did to find a suitable candidate for marriage.
However, even though I am completely ignorant of all science I know for a fact that the earth is not billions of years old.
How do I know?
Because every time a scientist uses a method to find out how old the Earth is, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, with His Noodly Appendage, is altering the data to make the Earth look older than it is. I know this because it has been told in His Gospel, and His word is True. He hasn't told me it's true or anything... but I have Faith.
Why would he do that?
Because he works in mysterious ways. It could be that he is angry at the decline in the number of pirates these last 1000 years, or maybe he doesn't want us to know because the information might cause imbalances in the Trees, Mountains, and Midgets he created for us to enjoy while hiking.

I think its sad that young people are being brought up with this style of thinking by dogmatic christian parents.
They are either too stupid to understand the facts of evolution or are too blinded by their faith to appreciate it.
Edit: To Cinderella
I was brought up as a very strict christian, and didnt fully realise until recently that was i was brought up believing was actually ridiculous dogma, with no logical processes and poor reasoning. The reason i "switched sides" so to speak was because i developed a great interest in physics, especially astrophysics.
Please note that evolution is a SCIENTIFIC theory, which means that it can be experimented upon to come to conclusive results. Look this up. Using the old "its just a theory" card when trying to refute evolution doesnt fly, i'm afraid.
Also, please do not assume that because i bash creationist upbringing that i am speaking from ignorance. I talk from experience. I would appreciate if you took that into consideration before making blatantly wrong assumptions in the future, thanks.

Their "evidence" is a book written by a group of people with no scientific knowledge whatsoever.
They believe the Earth is young because of the Bible.
95% of all scientists (this includes computer scientists and other "scientists") accept evolution.
In scientific fields dealing with evolution (genetics, biology, etc.), 99.85% of scientists accept evolution.
That means in relevant fields, .15% of scientists consider creation a valid idea.
Some numbers to ponder, huh?
Edit:
YEC's take two approaches to the Earth's age:
1) Current scientific standards for dating the Earth are flawed.
2) The Earth is young, but God gave it the appearance that it is aged.
Taking option one is calling a lot of scientists a moron.
Taking option two is calling God a charlatan and a deceiver.

We listen to the qualified people that can use all of the evidence to come to a logical conclusion. Using science, the evolution theory has been disproven over a hundred years ago. The evolutionists take whatever evidence they want, disreguard the rest and want you to believe something that can and has been proven a lie. If I want to know how old something is. I will just find out what the one that created it says. He has never been disproven. To prove the age of something, you must take the Biblical flood into account. That will mess up the realestate in a hurry. Carbon dating doesn't work on something that's age is known. Why would we assume that it works on something of unknown age. Check out www.drdino.com. Kent hovind has wonderful evidences to disprove the religion of evolution!!

The 6000 year date is based upon the recorded ages of people mentioned in the bible. If you add them up, you get to 4004 BCE as the year of creation.
The 10000 year date came about because archaeologists started finding evidence for civilizations that predate 4004 BCE. Because christians rarely study the boring genealogies of the bible in depth, fundamentalist leaders started using the 10000 year number without mentioning that it contradicted the bible as much as any of the gigayear estimates.

I don't think that carbon dating or these core samples are accurate. I don't see how carbon dating even goes anyhwere near to proving that the earth is billions of years old. Nor do I think that dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of years. I do not believe that there has been any ice age that man was around for.
As for qualifications...what do you mean by that? Do you mean have they studied under professors who would teach them so-called scientific fact that says otherwise? Half of the supposed proven facts such as evolution, are half-baked ideas with little actual proof of evolution in the sense that man evolved from apes (or a common ancestry.) Just because we have similar DNA, and similar traits doesn't mean we are anywhere near the same thing. It's absurd to think that the man who came up with evolution, decided on it by looking at different species of animals in different places around the world, and his findings of similarities and differences between them and other animals across the globe.

In response to drumboy's answer,
I think it is sad that young people are being brought up with this style of thinking by dogmatic evolutionists.
Evolution is a theory, not fact.
Besides, I remember growing up and later teaching other children from their youth, the books about dinosaurs, all of them ready billions of years ago. I think it is the other way around. People are being brought up to think evolution without it being challenged at all.
The style that is given to young children and young adults alike is evolution, seeing how the majority are not Christians.

HOW RUDE. The earth IS only 6417 years old. Whether you like to admit it or not. I know this because the south pole has a "born on" date clearly printed on it. Btw... the earths mantle is also made of the finest liquor God could brew. He's saving it for a special occassion though.
