Yes. And no, it's not foolish.
Animals, especially dogs and cats pick up on how their owner's are feeling. If you're upset, they get upset or try to comfort you.
I can always depend on my kittens to try and cheer me up.

dogs rely on body language for communication and they learn from a young age what yours means. it's not foolish to believe that as they are receptive to the moods of everyone in your house, try sitting on a couch and laughing at the tv and then think of something really sad, watch how your dog reacts. i dont believe that dogs remain unhappy, they react more to the immediate situation and get over it, than react like humans who ponder on the situation and keep a mood going past the situation that caused it. i assume you are worried about your dog being unhappy because of a situation at home, if this is so try and create time with your dog out of the house make it fun, try not to draw the dog into the situation and just act normal around your dog so that it doesnt think that its done something wrong.
hope this helps in some way

Definitely, animals sense emotions. When my dad passed his English Bulldog took to some strange behaviour and he stated developing various ailments, like skin problems etc. Took him to his vet and the vet said he was grieving, so after lots of love and attention and after about 6 weeks or so he finally perked back up, but he and my dad were so closed he took him everywhere with him that he could. So yes if there is fighting or tension in your home your dog will definitely react!

No that is not foolish.
Much as animals have the sense to be able to feel earthquakes, storms, and other natural phenomena before they happen, they can also sense the vibes in a room or house.
A dog is happier when his owner(s) are happier. Its a proven fact that dogs feel an immense loyalty to their owners, and therefore they pretty much can and will reflect the owners moods.

Yes, tension within the home can effect the dog who is a family member. It can indeed create more anxiety/unhappiness in the dog.

Yes it could make an animal unhappy. I know that before I divorced my first husband our pets would run and hide when we would get into an argument. They would mope around and fight amongst themselves sometimes too. And no you are not being foolish.

Yes it absolutely can affect the dog! They are very tuned into to our emotions. If all is not well the dog WILL pick up on it and be worried and upset.

Yes, animals definitely sense the atmosphere around them. They're very sensitive to it. Instinct, I think. If I was unhappy or sad, my dog would come and put his head in my lap to comfort me. If I was mad, he'd slink away. If I was happy, he'd feel playful, jump around, and smile.
