Yes. they are mandatory but you have freedom to choose. If you choose not to go to war then you will serve some years in prison. It is also called conscription.

A "draft" is mandatory. On the military (Selective Service?) side of this question all people within the purview of the current regulations must register as being eligible for the draft. A draft board (comprised of local officials) names the personnel to be drafted based upon the results of a lottery system (national). Not all registrants will be available for the draft at the time of the lottery, e.g., a person may die in the interim. But those drafted will be required to report to the 'authorities' at the appointed time and place. No show? Jail (if you have not been previously excused by you local draft board). Now if that ain't mandatory I don't know what is! There are some more technical attributes of this system but the above is a picture of what occurred during the last draft period.

It really depends on the type of draft your talking about. If your talking about a military draft where all men between the ages of say 17 and 30 have to enter then that is a mandatory draft. But you have other drafts such as the NFL or NBA drafts where the players want to be in the draft, but it is not mandatory for them to do so. Not being in such a draft makes it harder to make a team of course. So depending on how you are using it in a paragraph or sentience mandatory could be used.

In the past, yes. They would have a lottery, so while mandatory if you are called, not everyone was called. US men over 18 still have to register. While there is no draft, it is still mandatory to register.
Presently, the Us is talking about national service, like many countries. You can do military, if you chose, or national service, like planting trees, projects, working in inner cities etc...
The military should be all volunteer as when you have a conscript militray, you ahve people who don't want to be there and it ruins the service.
So yes, all drafts are mandatory, but only if you are actually called.
