My brother and I had a time to come home from playing at the neighbors. We were late and we were both grounded us for like a week. I never was late again even if it meant leaving him behind. He was late at least four if not more times. Each time my mother would increase the duration of the punishment and even made him do his and my chores. She even got him a watch. Nothing worked he would continue to be late. After the fifth time or so of being like 30min to hour late she spanked him. He was never late again. So how would you handle it.
During the punishment phase he was banned from Birth Day parities and all sorts of fun things for two months .

spanking should always be a last resort. For some kids a punishment is enough for them to learn others in the end need the smack. Punishment should always be used first. I suppose if you didn't want to smack, as a mum you could put your hair in rollers, dress up terribly and go get him. Tell him this is what you will do if he is so much as 2 min. late. Embarrassment might work. LOL.

I think the spanking was effective because of the humiliation factor. That can be similarly acheived by hunting his butt down at his friends house and dragging him out and causing a scene in front of them. Or after the first second time of his being late, insisting on dropping him off and picking him up, as well as going inside with him when he arrives to announce his curfew. That would have gotten his cooperation real quick as well.
I'm glad that it worked for your family. However, I don't believe that he learned any lesson from being spanked - except fear.

I personally dont have any kids, but I have babysat, have little sisters, and lived with my 5 neices and nephews. The thing that really seemed to work is not just making them do chores, but taking everything you possibly could from them besides books and such. Like for example, take away their TV, Video Games, or Computer. It works because after a while they get so bored out of their mind, and they wont do what they did before because they wont want the same punishment.
Hope I helped. =].

How old was he? Did he do this continuously? Meaning, was he always late? That's how this sounds by reading your post......
Because I do not spank, this is how I handled the situation.... IF my child was late I would go get them and make sure to be loud in front of their friends on how they are late coming home, etc. No kid, especially a boy likes their mom to embarrass them in front of their friends. If they were late again, he could only play in our yard. If he wanted friends to play with, they would have to come to our house to play and they could only stay for a certain amount of time. I would make sure his friends left at a certain time. Pretty simple. That would continue until he could come to me and tell me that he has learned his lesson and will not be late again. It got pretty boring not being able to go to his friends house or to the park, etc.
Worked like a charm.

If she did everything she could before she spanked him thats ok. Spanking is all right as long as you use only your hand and do not do it extremely hard. I dont believe in spanking but I would do it as a last resort. I guess sometimes thats the only thing that will work.

Sounds like she handled it very well. She done everything that she could to get the point across to him that he shouldn't be late and all failed. The last resort of spanking seemed to have worked just fine.

I do not believe in spankig no matter what. I was spanked growing up (I am now 45), and all it did was get me pissed at my parents. I have an almost 7 year old, and have never had to come close to spanking him..........

Handle what?
I thought you said he was never late again after the spanking.
Seems like the problem is solved, no?
