It depends really. It can kinda be forever, or it can be fulfilled I think.
For example, a promise being forever: A guy promises to love only his girlfriend and to never cheat on her. He marries her, lives his whole life with only her and he never once cheated on her throughout his life. He dies at an old age, always remaining faithful to his wife.
For example, a promise being fulfilled: A guy says he promises that he will marry his girlfriend one day. On a faithful evening, he pops the question and she accepts his proposition.
