With so many islands to choose from, we need help! My husband and I would like to plan a vacation to Hawaii. We are childless and in our early 30's. We would like to sightsee, shop, and of course spend time at the beach. We don't have a ton of money to spend, so is there any island that is less expensive than another? Also, any suggestions on hotels? Thank you.

I think Maui is the best for someone your age without kids. There are things to do that aren't expensive... especially the Road to Hana. See if you can find a cd and/or book about it with descriptions of little spots to stop.... rent a convertible, and get up early and go. If you are adventurous, there's a bike ride 38 miles downhill from the top of Haleakala, a dormant volcano. We did the one where they pick you up at 2am and you watch the sunrise before biking down. It is freezing cold (COLD) at the top, so dress appropriately... but as you bike down, you can remove layers. It goes through 6 ecosystems and 10,000 foot drop in elevation... all the way to the beach. It was amazing (and it's all downhill... so you don't have to be a big biker.)

To save money, you might think about staying in a condo where you can make your own food. Groceries are a little more expensive, but it food isn't what you go on vacation for, this is a good way to save. You can also go in the off season... October through mid-December (except Thanksgiving) are less expensive, but the weather is still beautiful and warm. Your flights will be about 1/2 the price this time of year as during peak season.

Oahu would be enjoyable as well for you. You can walk to lots of stuff, but the beaches are more crowded and you won't have as much of a tropical feel as on Maui.

Well I think that for sight seeing and shopping your best bet would be oahu, waikiki beach. most of the other islands just dont have as much fun stuff to do. However you could fly into oahu and spend like 2 days there then fly for one night to the big island since there are no active volcanos on oahu. Then fly back to oahu for 2 more nights that would be the best way to see it all. A great hotel would be the outrigger reef. or the outrigger on the beach they are both great hotels both owned by the same company and both right on the beach however the outrigger on the beach has nicer rooms while the outrigger reef has a much larger pool. Both hotels have restaraunts on the hotel site both have weekend shows at night. To buy more affordable flight tickets you should try hotwire.
hope you have a wonderful stay! : )

I forgot to mention that sometimes there are inter-island flights for just 18 dollars so it wont brake you to visit the big island if you go to oahu. also if you would like to keep the cost down you could try camping. it is actually very romantic there are many campsites on the beach.

Go to Oahu for your first time. Rent a condo instead of staying in a hotel room. http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii/oahu/south-oahu You can find condos for less than $100 per night. I found it to be less expensive, and you have more room to move around, can cook meals, don't have to tip a maid. Rent a car for a few days and drive around the island, checking out all the sites on the other side of the island.

Here is a link that will show you lots of things to see and do:

Lots of things are free to do, like watching the free movies on the beach in Waikiki on Saturday and Sunday nights.

The big island (Hawaii) is very dangerous since of the earthquakes. A romantic place would be at Honolulu,Oahu since of the beach, shopping and the hotels. Either that or Maui where there are "private" beachs and relaxition..Another suggestion for hotels is the Sheraton hotel in Honolulu where they have entertainment and dining at the ocean terrance. In Maui, you can look in the Costco Travel catlog where they have adults/couples only hotels.I hope this helps. =)

My wife and I go there every year and I want to say Oahu is a great island. There is plenty to do. We snorkeled, stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (a little pricey on the ocean side), went to Germaine's Luau etc and had a blast.

The "Big Island" of Hawaii lies above the mantle plume. It is the only island that is currently volcanically active, so I suggest you Oahu, the capital.

Kauaii - there is really nothing to spend your money on, but it is beautiful and if you ever have kids you will be grateful for those moments of peace and beauty you don't find many places very often. Oahu is fun and convenient, but very crowded and not really what Hawaii is about. You'll have a great time with your husband wherever you go.

Island of Dr. Shrinker. Hardly anyone has heard of it though.

Why don't you time this trip, as and when you make it, in such a way so that you are in the right period cycle to make it a Perfect Honey Moon also.
