Any age that seems right is right, just be safe.
We made sure the rooms were very baby-proofed and put a baby gate in the door of the room. They could get out of bed, not feel "trapped" by the shut door, but still be safe while they called for us. Also, if you are on an upper floor, make sure that the steps are gated off after you ungate their doorway. Tired kids looking for mommy's room in the semi-dark can easily fall down the steps. We still gate the steps and my kids are 3 & 6.
Some also recommend keeping the crib up for a while and letting the child choose each night to ease the transition. I didn't do that, but I know moms that have.
Good Luck!

My neighbors son is 18 months old and they switched him to a toddler bed a couple weeks ago (mainly because shes expecting again and they need the crib). He loves it. My daughter is 19 months old. We have a crib that converts into a toddler bed and we are going to convert it as soon as we figure out how to do it : ) Getting your son a toddler bed now is fine-just make sure you get the kind with little bars on the side so he doesnt roll out.

16 months is a great age to make the move to a toddler bed. it is low to the ground so if they roll out its not gonna severly injure them. He may test you once he realizes he can climb out but just stay consistant and put him back and he will catch on and soon he will not even get up. I have three children and started mine in a toddler bed when they turned a year old. It took a couple of weeks but then they got the hang of it. Good Luck!!

They usually say between 18mo and 2 years but I dont think a little early will hurt anything. Just know that when some kids get a toddler bed they get up in the middle of the night and wander the house.
Good luck

I put my daughter in toddler bed when she was about 18 months old and she was fine- she loved it! Alot of people think it is best to keep them in a crib as long as possible so that they cant get up in the middle of the night and walk around. But you are the mother and your know your child. If you think he will do this either put a gate up in his room or just dont get him the toddler bed. And on the topic of gates- if you do indeed get him that toddler bed- make sure you put gates up everywhere and childproof everything.
I hope this is help!

I think 16 months is a great age because they are less likely to test you by getting out of bed, he probably won't be bothered by it.
I took the sides off my toddlers cotbed at 16 months and she didn't even seem to notice, she has not once tried to get out. She has fallen out once or twice but since toddler beds are so low it didn't hurt her.

I have never wasted money on a toddler bed. There's no reason not to move them directly to a single bed with a safety railing until they learn not to fall off. Personally we use a top bunk (on the floor of course) because of the removable, built-in railings. But they sell railings at Babies R Us, etc.

My son began to climb out of his crib at 14 months so we made the switch to a toddler bed at that time. He loved it, and it has worked really well for our family. He even put himself to bed the second night he had it. :~)

My kids all got their "big" beds when they tried to climb out of the crib. It's a shorter fall out of bed than from the top rung of the crib afterall :o). I would say that keep him in a crib as long as possible, but if he's trying to climb out then move him. Just make sure that if he gets out of be in the middle of the night he won't be able to fall down any stairs or that there aren't other hazards around in case he wonders a bit before you hear that he's up.
Good luck

I think its a pretty good age. I put my daughter in a toddler bed when she was 18mos. old. As long as he can get down off the bed alone you are good. You may have to sit at his bedside until he goes to sleep at least for a little bit--until he gets used to it.
