Go to www.traveline.org.uk and use journey planner. It will tell you how to get from anywhere to anywhere else using any form of public transport at any time you specify.

I went from Hull to Norwich a couple of weeks ago so you're journey wouldn't be too different. Travelling by car is certainly a no-no for me, it's a bugger of an area to get to. I went on the train to Doncaster - changed over and went to Peterborough - and then changed again to get to Norwich. It was about 3 hr 45 mins in total but it's so much less hassle than driving down there. You'd have to have a look at the routes but it may be that you could actually get a train to Ipswich with only one change (probably at Birmingham). Hope this has shed some light on the matter for you.
