So I love the show ER and they always use these terms that I have no clue what they mean. Well it's about time I asked! Can anyone tell me what "V-Tak" is? (And remember I'm probably not spelling these right..I'm just spelling them like I hear them). Also, what is "Epi"? And if you know any of the other terms, let me know :-)

I know v-tac has something to do with the heart, I just want to know what that means the heart is doing?

Ventricular tachicardia or v tach is a deadly heart rhythm frequently most common rhythm seen after a heart attack. If not treated at once then can and usually will progress quickly to v fib or ventricular fibrillation which is when the heart is just quivering, not beating at all. First line of treatment is shocking in sets of 3 followed by first line drug of epi or epinephrine, Epinephrine is the first line drug for many deadly rhythm problems. E mail me if you have any more terms. It does make it more interesting to watch the show if you know what they mean.

Ventricular tachycardia, the rapid beating of the lower chambers in the heart, if left untreated may progress to Ventricular fibrillation, or V-fib, this makes the heart beat ineffective, with death to follow. The use of Epi, or epinephrine, a stimulant, "adrenaline" makes the heart more irritable, and more suseptable to recovering a normal rhythm with the delivery of a shock with the paddles.

v-tach is ventricular tachycardia, all ventricular arrhythmias are serious, meaning originating in the ventricles, the lower two heart chambers. Tachycardia means rapid heart beat, usually 140-250 beats per minute. this rapid of a pulse is very inefficient, the chambers have no time to fill, therefore the cardiac output is very low. brain and vital organs are not getting blood , therefore not getting oxygen. Often the condition advances to ventricular fibrillation, always fatal. Even when not fatal, irreparable damage to vital organs can occur if v-tach cannot be reversed quickly.
epi= epinephrine, an emergency room drug given to reverse many life-threatening conditions.

Vtac is when the heart is out of rhythm and/or partially contracting. Epi could be either be an injection into a nerve to stop pain or provide anesthesia or be a pen like object that injects epinephrine into patients who are having an allergic reaction.

I am glad to see that someone pays attention enough to ask questions. However, in order for you to remember what these terms mean go to the following website and look them up. The website is a great tool to have to look up medical terms and problems. It is WebMD. The terms are V-tachycardia and "epi" is a medication. Who knows, you may just be the next cardiologist who discovers something magnificant.

The person on the show is having heart irregularities and is in ventricular trouble...heart attack.

Epi means on.....depends on use, could be a spinal tap to nerve block to epinephrine to speed up system.
