Why did he punish the serpent anyway, since Satan was using the serpent?

Trying to determine "why" only gets you back to his "mysterious ways". The god of the bible is basically insane or, if he isn't, he certainly acts like it.

I don't think God did punish Satan by making him a snake. In fact, I am not certain that Satan came to Eve as a serpent at all. There is nothing in the Bible that says the animals (any animal) could talk. Instead, I like to think that God simply told Satan that he would become more reviled of all creatures by humans. And lets face it, the snake is pretty far down on the totem pole to most people. We just don't like them for some reason. I believe that mankind used the snake as the symbol of Satan because he was the most reviled of the animals at that time.

God punished the serpent because, the serpent knew he was in God's garden when he chose to be a tool for satan.

Dave, saying God is insane is almost paradoxical, since the definition of insane is to do the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If God expected different results, the different results would occur.
I don't believe I can answer for God about this question, though.
