Can a foreign born married to a US citizen drawing soc sec draw soc sec themselves. I was under the impression that you had to contribute to social security in order to obtain benefits.Husband is US citizen wife is legal immigrant who has never contributed. Both are seniors

Yes they can receive social security. We have a reciprocal agreement with some other countries in which retirement benefits can be paid out.

I'm far from being an expert on this subject, but I believe that since the husband is a U.S. citizen drawing social security benefits, that if he were to die his wife would still be eligible to receive survivor's benefits.

I'm under the impression that you have to contribute to it to get it. Although i think if the the husband was to die, she might be able to collect his for a short time.
If you don't have to contribute to get it, then i can see why when I become of age to collect why I'll never see what I put into it.

Leogirl0804 is correct. The US has reciprocal agreements with many countries in order for benefits to be paid out.

No. You need to work 40 quarters (10 years) in order to qualify.

But if the working spouse dies there will be survivor's benefits as long as the surviving spouse is a permanent resident or citizen.

got www.ssa.gov to learn more. if the person is not in the usa they may not be able to collect benefits it just depens on the situation. the website is the us social security adminstarion. even some native born americans cannot collect certain benefits abroad. go learn more.

If she is drawing off a portion of what he put into SS. That is called spousals benefits.
