Excellent question.

Some people go by what they hear and see about food. If they don't like the way it looks, they shy away from it. If they don't understand what it is, they comment negatively about it rather than ask about it. I'm not food shy myself; I'm willing to try almost any dish once, just so I know if it's for me or not. There are some foods that I couldn't stand as a kid but, now that I'm older, I enjoy them very much. Most bad experiences with food come from overcooking. I also find that some people who grew up eating foods limited to their culture are somewhat naive about other cuisines.

When I encounter someone who makes a negative or ignorant comment about food, I explain to them what it is and offer some to them to try so at least they can speak from experience.

Because -- due to media and popular culture, we are taught to "hate" certain things. Have you ever seen the movie "Gili" or "Glitter"? Even if you haven't you'd probably say they are "bad" movies because thats what the media says, and most people believe what they hear. There are alot of negative comments about things like Tofu and Soymilk -- and we buy into the negative beliefs and form the same negative opinions about them. Sadly this isnt a good thing.

i think it's because they're scared? my in-laws are like that: they won't eat anything that isn't meat and potatoes...and the meat has to be so well done, you have to crack open the burnt black outer shell to get to what little meat is left...YUCK...it makes cooking for them difficult...they always accuse me of being "weird" because i eat things that they think are nasty/bizarre. i have a hard time being tolerant of picky eaters. i grew up in the fairly rural South, where people put ranch dressing on everything and ketchup goes on steak, and they've never eaten a vegetable that wasn't fried...it gets pretty annoying!!

Trust me, I can't answer that. I even had customers who wouldn't try ostrich because it was "weird". Or wouldn't try wine because it was "nasty". Well apparently they'd been drinking Mogen David their entire lives. It's called ignorance and a fear of something that's not part of their "normal" lives. God forbid they try something different.

Probably because people are closed minded and not willing to learn about new things.

Maybe cause they are afraid that if they get it into their mouth they'd have no place to spite it out...and have to eat it and gag on it...
