Forgive me that I have to answer your question from Islam point of view.
When we are almost in second to die then only it's to late for God's forgiveness. How many sins and bad we committed as long as we realized and honestly come back to the right path, the forgiveness from Allah ( God ) is always open.
There was a story of a woman who work as a prostitute, one day she came accross a dog barking at a deep well. The woman tied her shoes to a string and drop down into the well and lifted up some water. She gave to the dog. A few hours later the woman was killed in accident. But Allah promised her heaven because of the good deed she made with her clean and honest heart ( by givng water to the dog ) although all her life she was working as a prostitute.

If you are christian you do need to keep asking forgiveness in an ongoing way, although technically Christ has already born your sins. I don't think its possible to lose salvation, although its possibly to lose ones reward. You'd need a pastor to give you the correct picture, even they say different things on this matter. I don't know enough to direct you well.

As for non-christians, God will generally give you loads and loads of chances, as He wants to save you very much indeed. You don't have to prove you're holy before repenting, repenting is just saying to God that you accept you have done things wrong, and believe in the redemption provided by Jesus. There are probably no more chances after death.
(I don't know the position of people believing in other religions, who genuinely believe they are the truth and seek to follow them earnestly.)

up until your dying breath.
See scriptural reference below from another.
Hebrews 6:4-10 if you're a Christian. This is the escape clause for Christians who wish to defect from the faith. It emphasizes the finality of the decision. Hebrews 10:26 reinforces the clause.

If you're not a Christian, technically you have until your dying breath, but the time is not at your choosing. John 1:9-10 says that Jesus "was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world."

You can't choose if you're not enlightened, so you better darn well not put off making the decision when you're "enlightened" by Christ to make that decision. You may put it off to your own detriment.

Waiting until you're lying on your death bed is an extremely risky proposition. By that time you may have certified your fate by having decided already through your willful decisions.

Never forget that Pharaoh hardened his heart three times. After that God didn't wait for Pharaoh to harden his heart, God hardened his heart the last three times before he was drowned in the Red Sea.

When he saw the sea closing in on him I doubt seriously that he had the time to carefully prepare his heart to say the prayer of faith. I'd bet his last words were "Oooooh shiiiiiiiiiit!" (only in proper Egyptian, of course)

NEVER!.

God can tolerate the sins of the world greater than we can tolerate those that sin against us.

Jesus suffers the sins of the world and showed a godlike toleration so that people know it isn't a God-only power.

My own present spiritual dilema is a love of mankind that doesnt include whores, men shagging and having anal sex. They have appeared to have healed the wound of Nero; but i asked you, a homosexual that doesn't do anal and is not the slightest bit emotionally gay about the way i'm treated?.

When you die, its too late. Other than that, probably associating partners with God. Also, the sins one commits against people (backbiting), for that, you have to ask forgiveness from the person (liberating really!)
God is all merciful, all forgiving.

After you have died and been cast into hell, tehn and only then is it too late to seek God's forgiveness. He's always there, listening and waiting for a chance to take you back, regardless of what you've done.

Jesus died on the cross to accomplish God's forgiveness for YOU some 2000 yrs ago not only yours but mine and all those who have died and those who have not yet been born!
Your forgiveness comes to you as a gift from the One who made you and all HE asks is that you acknowledge that he did so and love him for doing such a magnificent thing just for you. don't assume you now have license to do as much evil as you can that would certainly negate the fact that you love HIM. You know what's neatest ?If you establish this loving relationship with God you will get to live with him for ever!!!!!!!!

It is never too late for God's forgiveness, but first things first you must forgive yourself, in order for God to forgive you.
