Dogs will suprise you. Any breed can be good with children as long as you raise them that way. A dog reflects the atmosphere that it is brought up in. If the dog is raised around cats, kids and a calm home the dog will like cats, kids and be more relaxed than a dog that is untrained, undisicplined and unsocialized.
From wikipedia:
Temperament
Dachshunds are playful, fun dogs, known for their propensity to chase small animals, birds and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity. Many dachshunds are strong-headed or stubborn, making them a challenge to train. Often, dachshunds are a breed extremely loyal to their owners, a characteristic that is less pronounced in the wire-haired variety.
According to the American Kennel Club’s breed standards, "the dachshund is clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness, persevering in above and below ground work, with all the senses well-developed. Any display of shyness is a serious fault."[2] Their temperament and body language give the impression that they do not know or care about their relatively small and comical stature. Indulged dachshunds may become snappy[3].
The dachshund is known for its deep and soulful eyes and complex and telling facial expressions, the eyes having an allure that is commonly mentioned in writings about the breed. Coat type is often associated with characteristic temperaments; the long-haired variety, for instance, is considered to be less excitable than the other types, having been cross-bred with the even-tempered Spaniel in order to obtain its characteristic long coat. Because of the breed's characteristic barrel-like chest, the dachshund's lungs are unusually large, making for a sonorous and richly timbred bark that belies the dog's true size.

You might have better luck with a standard size than a miniature, the little guys tend to be overwhelmed by lots of flying feet and made nervous. Just consider the level of their little noses. You'ld freak, too, with lot's of rapid activity. Still, depends on the dog and the kids, socialization is key, and supervision. If the kids are able to act calmly around the dog it should be alright.

Most are good with kids. Wouldn't let small kids drag them around as they aren't a real tuff breed. Some develop back problems with age. For an older child they are really nice pets. Very affectionate and sweet dogs.

Depends on how they are raised. If the dog is raised with children, they will be more tolerant with the children, as long as the children are not pulling their hair and such. If the children are introduced later in the dachshund's life, they may be nippy, especially towards young children who think the dog is a toy. With any breed, dog and children should always be supervised when they are together!

I have a had a dachshund for 8 years, and when we got her, my kids were ages 8 and 4. I made sure they didn't irritate or play rough with her, so she likes them, but she is the jumpiest, yippiest, most cowed dog I have ever had. She loves the members of our family, but when we have guests, she is almost impossible to deal with. I wouldn't recommend a dachshund as a "family dog" from my experience. They are more "one person dogs".

Dauschaunds are great dogs, low matienence, fun loving, dont shed alot etc. however in my experience they can be a little snippity and aren't very tolerant of childrens playing such as tail and ear pulling and so forth. they also are known to be very "vocal" dogs who like to bark and growl alot which can put off alot of mothers. some great dogs for kids would be labradors, golden retrievers, and basset hounds, but if you were hoping for a smaller dog alot of cocker spaniels are good, especially if you get them as puppies, puppies tend to tolerate playing and such alot better than an adult dog hope it helps!!

They do have a tendency to nip...but this is something that you can be aware of and work on obedience training to remedy.
They are natural hunters. There willnot be a rat, mouse or squirrel anywhere around your home or apartment.
Just read up on there potential health issues (ie..skeletal-back-legs). And make certain you go to a respected breeder who monitors for health problems.
