These are files that are not previews for the iTunes store. They were either burned from CD or obtained from a friend.

Maybe they are giving you a preview of the song to allow you to decide if you want to purchase the song. If not, they cut it off.

good question.... honestly i don't know the answer but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone....mine does that too...i'm terrible at trouble shooting computer things so I went out and got one of those things that I can plug my ipod into directly and it plays my music.
