I have done research on these now but when I went to buy one from my pet store the lady said that they can just be fed on seeds and that they can live 100 years! Should I buy it anyway or go to another store? Where can I buy the nectar they eat because this store only sells seeds

this may be a dilemma for the animal lover. Do you 'rescue' the bird, because the pet shop owner obviously has no clue about how to care for them, or do you go somewhere else? I suggest go to a responsible seller. Buying from the ignorant person is simply condoning their selling pets they don't know anything about. If you want a pet bird go to a breeder or a shop that sells hand-reared babies from or on behalf of reputable breeders. Any pet shop that knows how to care for lorikeets will sell the nectar mix.

I would be seriously worried about the health of this bird. Obviously the pet shop lady knows absolutely nothing about the species. You can look at this two different ways. First, run from this place, because the bird could have been damaged by bad care, or buy the bird to provide it with a decent home and hope it wasnt in the shop for too long.

You can order the nectar online.

I would report this pet store to the local animal control for abuse! Rainbow Lorikeets don't eat seed. It is probably starving to death.

I would find a reputible breeder and purchase one there. They can tell you where they are finding the nectar mix and other important things about their care.

I know it can be purchased over the internet if there aren't any pet stores near you.

Check the Purina mazuri website, the Purina folks have a line of feeds for almost every animal and bird. They've done lots of dietary research on every species.
