I'm Assyrian, we are the descendants of the Mesopotamians. Also, the indigenous people of Iraq. We were named after our ancient god, Ashur. We weren't slaves or anything like that. Our people invented many important things: lens, glass, wheel, first written language [Cuneiform] etc. We have been in Iraq before it was called Iraq, since it was Mesopotamia (7000+ years). We Assyrians speak the language Jesus spoke, and were the first group of people to accept Jesus. Yes, we all are Christian and live all over the globe. Around 4 million Assyrians exist globally, I live in the States [parents born in northern Iraq]. Hope I enlightened!

Assyrian can refer to many things. It could mean the ancient Mesopatamian empire. It could refer to the current Christian sects, it can refer to the language.

I think all, or almost all, Assyrians today are Christians. They live in places like Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran and Turkey.

If I recall correctly, the ancient kingdom of Assyria (which was around long before Christ was born) covered roughly the same territory as modern-day Iraq. Today's Iraqi citizens may be descended from the Assyrians, who were polytheistic.
