I have to decide to do First Communion or not. What is it? Does it mean I don't believe in god if I don't do it? How long does it take?

Communion is a request of Christ at THE first communion with his apostles to do as often as they remember him. It is for believers in not only God, but Christ and his atoning sacrifice. That is what it represents.

There are requirements laid out by Paul that ask Christians not to take it lightly. You should make sure you are not holding grudges or involved in repetitive sin that has not been confessed. There are also some warnings. Check it out in I Corinthians 11:23-32

If you are an Adult, you will need to go to Religious Education classes called RCIA. Your local priest will tell you how long the classes run. If you want a deeper relationship with God, you will need to go. Children have their own version of this.
Your First Holy Communion will be the first time you receive Holy Communion.
If you wish to later be a God-parent, a sponsor for Confirmation or a witness for Matrimony, or married in the Church, you will have to be a practicing Catholic who has received their First Holy Communion as well as Penance and Confirmation.

First communion is when you accept bread and wine as an offering and symbol of Jesus body sacrifice for your salvation. Communion is done every Sunday for Catholics and every once in a while for non-catholics. It doesn't mean you don't believe in God if you don't do it and it takes 30 seconds to do.

It is an excuse for a party and for you to get gifts (although many will turn out to be catholic stuff).

Most protestant churches allow any baptized christian to take communion. The catholics decided that only catholics can take it and that they have to go through a christian education course (called CCD, I believe) before they can take it for the first time.

First communion is usually a special service where the kids taking communion get prayed over and relatives get invited.

In some Christian churches, such as RC, Episcopalian, Anglican, and more, you make your first communion after having completed catechism, or teaching. It is what you learn as a child to understand what Communion means.

You take classes and then have a ceremony where you and others in the class have your first communion. You eat the wafer and wine for the first time.

That's when the church believes a child has been inculcated to the point were they'll probably not look beyond that particular religion.
