Hi, your dog could be beginning to get an eye infection. He is showing symptoms of the first signs. If that is the case the eye will become redder and start draining or showing signs of pus around the rim. A vet would have to give you eye drops for that. It could also be that while you were out he got something in his eye, like a piece of dust, eyelash or something like that and that would make it look like you see it now, or he could have scratched it with his on claw. If that is the case then you have done a good job by washing it out but it will still be irritated for him so he will continue to keep it shut and the rim will be red for a little while but both should clear up soon. You just need to watch it now and see if it gets worse and turns into some kind of infection or if it just clears up on its own. You don't need to do anything else at this point since you have already done the best thing possible by washing it out. Just keep an "eye" on it and go from there. If my some chance the cornea got scratched he may still need to see the vet to get drops so an infection does not occur but you will know because he will continue to want to keep the eye closed if that has happened. My be is that it will be clear my tomorrow. You should like you take great care of your animals. Great job!! Judy

To come on that fast, it was probably a scratch. Since it is an eye, I'd have a vet check it as soon as possible. In the mean time, most larger pet stores carry Terramycin. It is an antibiotic salve that is meant for the eyes. Call the pet store before going, as not all carry it. This would give your dog some relief until the vet can check the eye.

Try flushing his eyes with water continuesly.. this is a major problem he might have a serious infection im really sorry to say this but take him to the vet when it opens.. or otherwise blow/ rinse his eyes, that will help for a while an make he gets a lot of rest.
he might be allergic, got into a fight, or simply scratched his eye!
best of luck =)

Majority of red eyes are from either allergies or scratches. With the sudden onset of this case I would say a scratch. Leaving it alone is the best thing to prevent dirt or bacteria from getting into it. However, if it becomes matted or has odd drainage(other than eye boogers) you should look at getting him into the vet. Otherwise it will heal on it's own.

He may have gotten into something he's allergic to. Do you see anything that looks like he could've gotten into it? My dog got into chicken once and he's allergic to it, he swelled up his eyes were teh same way. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do but take him to the vet tomorrow. However, there should be certain vets that take emergencies. It may cost more but atleast you'll find out now rather than later. It could be nothing major or it could be serious, up to you!!

Maybe try putting some polysporin drops in it. Or hold a cold cloth on it. Maybe he poked it on something.

do you have any eye ointment at home? if so try that, just bathe it, in the mean time, until you can see vet.
Hope he's ok, :)
