Why do some scientists prefer battery-powered vehicles to those burninh CNG?

Natural gas may burn cleaner than gasoline or deisel fuel, but it still emits carbon dioxide and other pollutants and is a fossil fuel (non-renewable). While our power plants presently run primarily on fossil fuels, we could in theory charge electric cars from electricity from solar cells, wind, geothermal, hydroelectic, or other sources.
