Yes, you should. They only allow animals they consider good socially adoptable to become adopted. I adopted a cat there 4 years ago and she is they best cat I have ever had. Also take into consideration if the animals in the humane society are not adopted they are euthanized. This would be a great place for you to find a good pet!

Most certainly, YES you should adopt your dog/pup from a rescue or animal shelter.
When you go to the shelter/ adoption event, you'll get to speak with the volunteers/foster "parents." These individuals can help you find the right dog. Plus, you will have the opportunity to give the dog a "test walk" to see how he/she works for you.
Remember that each dog is different, coming from different backgrounds, so it's hard to say whether you'll have it extra easy or a little rough in the beginning. Any dog that you bring into your home, there will be some adjustment time. Now, a pup coming from a reputable breeder may have it a little easier than a rescue dog...but for very good reason. A dog from the breeder will most likely cost you a fortune, while a rescue dog will cost minimal...AND if the dog isn't already spayed/neutered, you'll most likely get some kind of huge discount for the procedure.
My S-I-L adopted her lab mix as a pup. They went through a short "rough period," but the crate training helped tremendously (they had the puppy on free roam all day, and dog pooped and peed everywhere! That stopped when I strongly suggested proper crate training...they were happy they did it)
I adopted my German Shephard from a breed specific rescue organization. I knew that I was going to have it rough with this particular puppy because he was emaciated, wormier than ever, and he wouldn't eat or poop in front of me. It took a good $500 in vet bills and 5 months to get my new puppy settled...but it was all very much worth it. After my experience, I swear, I will NEVER buy a dog again. I will always adopt from a rescue or shelter!!!!
Because both my S-I-L and I adopted our dogs as pups, we were able to properly socialize them at the perfect age. They are very social animals.
Good for you! You will feel like you're doing the right thing!

Getting a dog from a humane society is a great idea! It gives them a second chance. Some of the dogs do have social issues, but the humane society will always warn you before you get them about the issues. Dogs from the humane society need lots of attention, but so do puppies from a breeder. Health issues depend on the specific dog. But even dogs with health issues need a loving home.

Good for you! You're right, there are so many dogs needing homes.
A puppy is not likely to have any social issues, it would be too young for that. And any decent shelter will have all their animals health checked by a vet before they are adopted.
We have had many dogs from the shelters over the years, and they have all been great dogs! All ours were adults, so they did have a few issues, but nothing serious. And there is nothing more loving than a rescue dog.

I'd defenitely reccomend getting a puppy or dog from the Humane Society.
I've gotten all of my dogs at shelters, except for my Pomeranian. The best dog I ever had was a Shetland Sheepdog/Papillon mix and he was my best friend for years. The two other dogs I have right now except for my Pomeranian are also shelter pups and are just wonderful. I also have two cats from shelters.
Perhaps consider getting an adult dog from a shelter. Puppies can quickly find homes, but adults aren't always that lucky. If you do get a puppy from a shelter, make sure to take it to the vet upon getting it.

Adopting from the Humane Society is a wonderful idea! I adopted a 1/2 chihuahua 1/2 minpin from a Humane Society. He was a wonderful dog and lived for nearly 13 years. Good luck!

YES, adopt a pup! Usually they give them their shots and spay or neuter and have a health check up. I've gotten several dogs there and have been well pleased. Use your gut instinct and look at them carefully; you'll find the one for you. Maybe a bit of research to find what kinds of dogs you might like would help before you go...large or small, do you live in an apt or have a large yard. Can you afford a big dog or are you on a small dog budget?

I have adopted a dog and I think it's a great idea. It's true that some of them have social problems because of where they came from or how they were treated. But the great thing about going to your local humane society is that the people there have sociolized and taken care of the dogs and they can tell you about the personality, and you can play with the dogs and see for yourself which one is a match for you. So I say go for it, I'm sure that dog will be happy you chose to rescue it.

I think your idea of adopting one from your local Humane Society is great.
But: understand you may have a hard time finding one. Pups go fast, it's the older dogs that tend to stay. Pups are the hot commodity. You also want to be sure that they regularly bleach and disinfect the kennels (some places simply don't have the manpower to keep this up). Pups don't have their vaccinations, and in pounds or shelters, illness spreads fast and pups contract it quick. Proper cleaning regiments decrease this greatly.
Also be looking for bright, clean eyes; a clean nose, vigor, and puppy spirit.
