And if so, why?

Gee, some years back the Assembly of God was saying it was going to be in 1984. Then they changed it to sometime in the early '90's. I remember getting the thing in the mail with '1984' having a line drawn through it and the date in the '90's handwritten in right above it. I saved it for many years since I found it so amusing.

I have to wonder which branch of premellinialists is spreading this date around now. Like Sylvia Browne, Montel's pet psychic, they are wrong more often than they are right. If anyone has a link to the dweebs originating this one, please post it. I want to save it for Dec 23, 2012.

I don't, and I hope there aren't a lot of people that do. They are forgetting that the Mayans simply believed that an era will come to an end in 2012, not the entire world as we know it.

The world as we know it will be destroyed....
Then...
100 years later a man will find a guitar in a cave and learn how to play it.
It will bring him much joy and happiness and he will want to share it with the rest of the world.
He will bring what he has found to the priests of the temples of Syrinx.
The priests will scoff at him and mock him...they will scream at him and tell him that this thing that he has found is" Another toy..that helped destroy..the elder race of man"
They will destroy it in front of him.
He will go home with a broken will and dream of a wonderful society without religion.
When he awakes he will realize how empty his life is without the privilege of free thinking and he will take his life.
At this point the priests announce to the solar federation that they have assumed control.

It could but then it could end today as well. No human being knows exactly when that day will come. There have been many so called prophecies before regarding the end times and thus far they have all be wrong. I guess we will not really know until the time comes.

The world will indeed end in 2012, for a significant fraction of the population--maybe around 1½%. The rest of us will grieve and then carry on after the funeral.

Wow, the guy pumping my gas yesterday espoused this view (we were checking out the eclipse together). His argument was that the Mayan calendar ended in the year 2012. I don't think he had a Ph.D. but you never know.

The world will end when God wants it to end, not before or after that

Plenty, I just ain't one of them. Why?: The Mayan calendar ends on the winter solstice that year. There is a hell of a source.
