Sorry to say, but I had the same situation when my last pup was 16 weeks old. She was attacked by an English Bull Terrier. Staffies are on the dangerous dog register and you should report this incident to the police immediately.
You shouldn't however, let your worries rub off onto your dog. Make sure you get her to interact with other dogs asap. Stay calm, chances are it wont happen again, and she may have learnt a valuable lesson on how to approach other dogs.
If she does get attacked again, there are a few things you can try....kick the dog between the back legs.....put your hands between its back les and grab it around the throat (this is what I had to do, nothing else worked)
DONT punch the dog in the face or attempt to pull it off.....it will just hold on tighter. DONT carry a knife, if you use it, you'll be the one in court!!
Hope you and your dog recover well. Good luck

Report the dog owner to the cops, even if they don't do anything about it this time, you've started a paper work trail in case it happens again.
Carry the stick and pepper spray, or just red pepper when you walk in case you need it. If you can not stop the animal with the stick or pepper there is another thing you can do. Knock the dog over on it's side, even if it is still biting your dog. Then drop with both knees as hard as you can into it's rib cage. This will break the ribs, most likely punch a hole in a lung and definitely make the dog let go of your dog. If you must resort to this, be ready to get up and back off as fast as you are done so the dog doesn't bite you next. (most of the time it won't be in any shape to try to bite after this)

no you CANNOT carry a knife! you will be charged with carrying an offensive weapon! and if you maim/kill the offending dog you will also be charged with vets bills etc! the best thing you can do is ALWAYS scan the surrounding area for ANY other dogs (i ALWAYS do this before i let my older dog off her lead) she was nearly attacked-twice-by a staffie x pit bull i had to pick her up by her collar and lead and my sister beat it off with a pop bottle as i held my dog above my head to stop this dog attacking her! the police and dog wardens were informed as was an RSPCA inspector-who had come to pick up a cat the dog had maimed earlier in the day! luckily he had a serious word with them and they were Ok for a while but the dog attacked one of my mums cats and the authorities were called again and soon after the dog mysteriously 'disappeared' never to be seen again! if i do see a potential threat to my dog i will either wait until it has gone in a different direction or keep her on her lead until it is safe to let her off again. i have also thought about getting a 'dog stop distraction device' which emits a 120 db 'screeching' sound that should stop a dog dead in its tracks when you blast that in its face! remember a dogs hearing is far more sensitive than ours! then make a quick getaway while the dog is still stunned! read this website for details http://www.companyofanimals.co.uk/dogstop.php

Staffordshires have a infinitely high tolerance for pain. Your knife will not affect him.
A police officer in our town had to shoot a pitbull in the head while the pit was 'eating' the leg off his owner. This did not stop it. after shooting it more, the dog died. The medical team had to remove the dog's head to loosen the jaws grip on the man's leg.
Call the animal enforment, this dog needs to be reported. Next it could be your dog again, or a small child.
Dog's don't 'play' by holding another dog's head in it's mouth. This was aggresion.
You were VERY lucky!

I don't think you can prevent an attack. You could try taking pepper out with you so if a dog clamps down on your dog again you can chuck a load of pepper in its face, A knife definately won't work on the dogs with the "lock jaw" but I hear pepper in the face/nose does work. You also have to report this idiot irresponsible owner whether the dog attacks again or not.

The exact same thing happened to my mini schnauzer the other day!! My dog was off the leash, so partly my fault, adn this dog was leashed, but my dog ran over to say hello next thing i know this beast had my dogs head in is mouth! HE got a scrape above his eye, luckily it missed the eye. I used saline solution/ antiseptic (non stinging) to clean the wound, and applied fuciderm (antibiotic waterproof dressign) and broughtr him to the vest the next day. He is fine, but eye is a bit swollen. I wold bring your dog to the vet. I would also have my dog leashed in an area where you know there is an aggressive dog when walking, if that aggressive dog was not leashed then you should make a complaint about it. I would avoid the area.... and go see a vet asap.

Report this to the police and/or animal control right away. There are laws against dangerous dogs, and this one needs to be reported.
Don't go carrying a knife, you will get in trouble yourself. And you are more likely to get hurt with it, than the dog. A can of pepper spray would be a good idea, if you are liable to encounter the dog again.

You can not control what others allow there pets to do, but I'm sure your town has Dog Laws. Most require that an owner
have their animal under control (leashed) when in public and if
you file a complaint the law will do the job for you. Make sure your own dog is under proper control first. Second you could just
avoid the area where the dog lives..

A pit bull attacked my dog in my yard. My dog was on a lead, which I was holding. When I pulled on the lead his collar came off. The young man who was looking for the pit didn't help in any way. I got a hammer and hit the dog in the head until he let go of mine. I got between them and swung the hammer backwards in case he was coming at my dog again, but he was running away. Thankfully my neighbors called the police. And, thank the Lord my dog was fat, so he didn't get seriously injured. I took a baseball bat out with me for a while.

Don't carry a weapon if you do and hurt the dog you will go to jail.
If a staffie bites and won't let go stick a strong stick through it's collar and twist to make it need air and let go.If it wears a harness not a collar use your dogs lead and basically strangle it into letting go.
