We are not of the pop music culture but do have a computer. Of what use would an IPod be to us.

You can download and listen to music, and you can also listen to podcasts. My dad is 73 and I'm planning to buy him an ipod for Christmas. He spends a lot of time babysitting my niece and nephew and sometimes gets bored when they're doing art classes and such, so I think this will give him something to entertain him while he's waiting for them. Obviously your interests may vary, but there may be some intersections. Here are some sites that I have found that have music/podcasts that I think will interest him:

http://www.archive.org/index.php - they have some music from the 1920s - 1940s as well as old radio programs that I'd like to download for him. He's a big fan of Abbott and Costello and Jack Benny as well as some of the programs like The Phantom and Flash Gordon, so I think he'll get a kick out of these.

http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_directory.php - NPR podcasts

http://www.old-time.com/toc.html - more old radio programs

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page - Project Gutenberg has audio books available for free download. The quality varies and I think he'd prefer to read the book himself, but you never know.

There are also a lot of interesting podcasts available at the iTunes store for free. I have feeds set up on my office computer, and that's where most of my links are, but these are some that might be interesting.

You can use it to store podcasts (which are essentially downloadable radio), of which iTunes has a LOT to choose from. If you subscribe to a particular podcast, iTunes will automatically download the newest one each time it is released, and the next time you plug in your iPod, it will transfer it over.

That, and there are downloadable audiobooks that you can get from audible.com or through iTunes, so you can listen to a book anywhere you're at.

Then the main reason for the iPod, music. If you have a good sized CD collection, iTunes can import from those, and transfer the songs to your iPod so that you can listen to them anywhere, or you can purchase new music from the iTunes store.

If you plan on purchasing the video iPod, you can also purchase videos that you can watch on your iPod (be warned, you won't want to try to download these unless you have high speed internet!).

If you like to walk and listen to music would be my guess. You can download the music you want, from classical to pop rock.

To load it with whatever type of music you listen to (any of your current CDs, for example). You'd then have the ability to carry your music with you and listen to it via headphones, or on your car stereo (by purchasing additional add-ons).
