Hi, i just filed a return but forgot to add an addtional w2. I have already cashed both the federal and state checks. After filling out the 1040x form. The federal refund is the same, but the state refund is less the amount i just cashed. Do i write a check to the state for the difference? And when mailing my 1040x, do i need to send my 1040 to federal and my 540 to state?

When you mail your 1040X, attach any schedules or forms that were not on the original return, or that changed from the original return. Attach the new W-2 to the front page of the 1040X.

When you mail your state amended return, attach the new W-2 and include payment for the difference in refund. Pay attention to the instructions for your state. Some will require certain federal schedules.

In neither case do you also send in the original return with the amendment.

You do not have to include a copy of the original return with the 1040X, if you owe a balance to the State make sure to include the payment with the amended return.

Yes, you need to send in a check for the difference to the state. You don't send copies of the original returns.
