We have a 6 month old GSP, a hyper active hunting dog. We want to get her a friend but our first attempt failed. It wasnt our dogs fault but the new puppy was very antisocial and would attack our dog all the time. The new one doesnt like people either. But we want one that will like...play with the GSP and not bite her. GSPs are medium sized dogs so we dont want a little lap dog or a lazy *** dog. we want to be able to take it hunting and riding with us.

Your best with another type of dog from the hunting group. A weimaraner is a good choice.

But first....

You can't expect a instant 'friendship' between two canines. This doesn't happen, they are not humans. They need to 'test' one another and 'fight' for hierachy. This is where obedience training is a MUST!

You have to start training your pointer. He needs to be trained in all the basic commands along with 'fun' activities like hunting, tracking and retrieving. Introduce a new pup only under your supervision. Both dogs must be taught what behaviour is acceptable. YOU are the boss, you are their leader. They will find great comfort in having a leader be responsible and firm.

After proper training, you will find your Pointer to no longer be hyper-active, but a true sportsman, and the pride of its breed!

I also own a GSP as well as Danes and labs.If you want a hunting dog in addition to a pet why not another GSP? If not another one why not another sporting breed?...English Setter, (English) Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Viszula, Weimeriner, etc.

Also don't worry about rough puppy play..that is normal and it is how puppies play with each other.
