I mean is it safe to have a doberman together with 17+ kids

I am so tired of hearing negative things about Dobermans. I am not actually sure where this incorrect stereotype came from. They are fantastic smart dogs, very willing to please and they make great family dogs. The respected dog trainer and author John Ross lists them in his top 10 recommended dogs for families. They have strong personalities and need a firm hand and plenty of positive training. You also need to ensure you buy one from a respectable breeder who breeds for health and temperment. 17 year old kids should be a breeze, as long as they respect the dog and are willing to put some time into learning to train and live respectfully with a dog (this is true of any breed though). A word of warning. Dobermans are one of the more expensive breeds. Expect to pay no less the $1600 (probably more like $1800-$2000) for a well bred Dobie. If that is out of the price range, there are lots of rescued Dobermans that would love to find a home with your family, it just takes a little more patience and digging around to find one.

All the best with your dog search!

ADDITIONAL NOTE: It is my guess that the asker has 17 year old kids, NOT 17 kids. The subtitle is a little misleading, but I don't think 17 children are invovled. Just a few teenagers.

To truly and accurately answer your question there needs to be more information given..In my opinion it depends on several factors, such as , is it a dog or a puppy - puppies are much more capable of adjusting to new situations and learning to live with different kinds of people. With most 17 year old children, there really shouldn't be any trouble at all if this is the case. However, if it is an already established or older dog being adopted into your home, you might not be aware of what "baggage" the dog brings with it. Whether another teen or child was cruel etc... in such a circumstance I may be a bit leary, no matter what kind of dog it is.
As a child, I grew up with Doberman's and they were sweet, beautiful dogs. They were very good with me, and my siblings/cousins. If anything they were over-protective of us being that is part of their nature, and kept us out of trouble/strangers away from us. But again, it really has to do with how any dog is raised and what it already knows.
Now as a parent myself, I have chosen to raise my children around dogs too. I have a black lab and a rottweiler. When I tell people this they are alarmed, because rottweiler's have bad reputations for being aggressive mean dogs, but that is not the case with mine, and she has shown how much a part of the family she is, and how much she cares for my children, she put her own life on the line when she thought my child was in danger. Just use your best judgement, and until you can be 100% sure monitor both the kids and the dog together.

Of course it is. As long as you have properly trained the 17 yr. olds. (hahaha)

Your teens must have your trust that they will not mis-treat the dog, for fun. The dog will be a respected member of the family, and the dog will be trained to follow the natural pack order, your the leader, the teens are 'above' the dog..and the dog has to earn his 'keep', by following commands and being a good family member.

Dobermans are good dogs. Normally they follow only one master. But with a group effort of training they can be a good pet and home protector.

That many kids can make a dog nervous. If the dog is used to kids, it may do okay, but it also depends on the child, younger kids tend to pull tails and fur, not realizing it may hurt the dog, which can cause a dog to nip

I believe this may be to much for the dog. But it also depends on the childrens age. Older children 12 and maybe not but younger kids I dont think that would be a good idea.

depends on the dog - and the kids. I had a dobie who was as sweet as they come. My 4 year old nephew used to sit on top of her and watch tv. It all depends on the dog's temperment and how the kids treat the dog. Good luck

I would just put the dog in a seperate room and not risk it. More details would be nice, such as the ages of the kids, the temperament of the dog, etc.
