I have an image I scanned (a business card), and I would like to make the white background transparent. Can I do this once the image is scanned? How?

Alternatively, can I rescan the card where it will automatically create the background as transparent?

Once you have scanned the image, save it as a GIF file. Before clicking on the OK button, click the Options button and run the optimizer. In that dialog box you can set white as a transparent color. Also note that not all image format support transparency.
