Hi, NYC -- It varies according to their posting, family size, experience, and a few other factors. $150K isn't too far off. Honestly, it's not a job I would want in most cases; the pressure is unbelievable, chances for vacation are few (you have to cable to request permission, and it may not be granted), and the implementation of U.S. foreign policy is entirely on your shoulders. Not to mention the welfare of your Embassy workers in a possibly hostile environment, as well as your foreign workers; interference from meddling Congressmen and -women; and the smooth operation of a host of different U.S. government agencies and bureaus to which the Embassy plays host.
Ignore Luosechi's idiotic comments -- there is at times a fine line between clever and stupid, but not in his case.
