Carefully read St. John 3:16. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him SHOULD not perish , but have everlasting life. Look up the meaning of this word. Should denotes an upcoming event. Let me give you an example. I should give you some money. I will give you some money. Something has to happen to change the should to a will. This is where Acts 2:38 comes in.You have to believe before you will perform the rest of the Salvation Process. The Bible also says that the devils believe and they tremble. Believing isn't enough!!

They claim a special revelation. They claim that when Jesus commanded the apostles to baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit in Matthew 28, He was really saying to baptize them according to Acts 2:28, because the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is Jesus. I got mixed up with that stuff when I was a new believer and it was very difficult to extract myself. It's not the gospel of grace. Sorry if I offend and oneness people by saying that, but I was very distressed to hear them tell me that my family and friends weren't really Christians because they didn't adhere to their specific doctrines. It's a very exclusive sect. We see through a glass darkly. All of us are wrong on some points. We need to remember that.

Jesus said the formula for baptism was in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I think in the other books of the Bible where it says "in the name of Jesus" was a way of differentiating between baptisms of Jesus, and baptisms of Mithras, and other deities.

Because like every other religious quote, it can be translated to mean whatever you want it to mean. The holy scriptures of different religions are always said to mean whatever they want it to mean.
