What is the best way to start setting up my position on a road bike? I have the correct size frame, I use Look clipless pedals and have all the parts except the stem. I am a pensioner, not as flexable as I used to be, height 180cm and inside leg 85cm, weight about 11S 3lbs.

go get fitted at a bike shop....

reasons behind it...

incorrect seat position or cleat position can cause problems with your knee (this happens a lot)

to have someone check your back position, making sure your not arching and correctly having a flat back (otherwise, that will be a problem in long rides)

those are some issues that can come.

but since you have the bike and don't have the stem, you can take it to the shop, and find one that sit you best. they will put you on a trainer and since you're not as flexible, they can put a higher angle stem, so you're not leaning down as much or too strtched forward where your arms are locked out (which hurts like hell after 10 minutes)....

any good bike shop should have many stems to play with and it shouldn't cost more than 40 dollars..

First set your seat height, You should be able to sit on the bike and put both feet to the floor. When you are comfortable with that set the handlebars up so that you are leaning slightly forward when on the bottom of the bars (if you have dropped bars rather than straight) A slight incline down towards the rear of the machine on the bars gives a relaxed hand position. Then make slight adjustments until you feel comfortable. remember there is no perfect position, as you say you are not as flexible as you were. My riding position has changed considerably over the last 45 years. Above all relax and enjoy a great exercise and hobby.

A professional eye over your seating position can save you some aches and pain. A visit to somebody who knows what to look for can save you a bit of trouble. You may not get everything right first time though.

The first step is to get your leg length right. Your legs should be almost straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke. (without pointing your toes).

The rest varies a bit depending on the bikes geometry but as a rough guide

The seat should be about level maybe a small touch higher at the front (on level ground). Set your handle bar higher for comfort and lower for speed.( you don't get a lot of adjustment but you can change parts as necessary.)

If you experience aches and pains that are not muscle or fitness related something is amiss. Sheldon brown has a good guide here to address problems.

The only thing you need is the book: Andy Pruitt's Complete Medical Guide for Cyclists ( Author - Andrew L. Pruitt ) Everything's in the book from setup the seat height to adjust the cleats....Or you can get more info. at bikefitting.com.
Luckily you found a correct size frame. Short like me (163cm) is hard to find the right frame size !
