I want to start reading stories to my baby boy, but I have no clue as to what kind of books to read to him. I want something that will hold his attention. If anyone knows of any books I should consider, please list them! Thanks!

I was in the same situation as you as far as trying to find a list of the books I should have for our 18 month old son as we seemed to be reading the same books over and over. Of course I didn't think of the most logical place to get the information which was at the library. My wife and I found brochures at our local library with a list of the top 100 recommended books for children at each age level. We've found it to be a great resource and now go to the library every month and check out books that are on the list... it's a lot cheaper than buying books and while some of the books on the list are well known there are some great books that we probably would never have found on our own.

One year old boys have an attention span of about 2 minutes when reading to them. You can start up reading him very short baby story books you can find at the store. Big Letters and little words, with pictures. Animal books that show the animals and the name in big letters. You are a good mother to start reading ot him. This should started long ago but now is a great time. When he get tired of listening to you, he will tell you by his actions. Just put the book down and let him go. Once he understand that it is a time for him to be with you more he will soon ask for the book for you to read to him. Good Job. Keep reading and buying books.

Dr. Seuss' Hop On Pop is a beginner book. The sentences are short and the pictures are large. May I
suggest that you also 'tell' him stories because 1 year
olds' attention span is perhaps a second and a half. Make
some sock puppets and teach him his body parts. Since
he won't know what the words mean it won't matter what
the plot is. Tell him about the "Five Little Piggies".

Get books with pictures of cars, trains and construction machines - Like Baby's First Trucks book etc.

Another book both my kids loved was the kind with the clay images like the Usborne books - they duplicated these images better than cartoon images.

My children also loved "I'm as quick as a Cricket" and "The Big Hungry Bear" (board books) by Audrey Wood

Another great set of books I got was the "Knock Knock Who's There?" and "Munch-Munch Who's There?" Powell-Jones slide and seek books.

The one book you must get - because I have yet to meet the kid who doesn't like it (and I babysat many) was Chicka Chicka ABC - also got the DVD with the other stories - this book and DVD is amazing.

Books that have one word to maybe one sentence per page would be a good start. Then you could talk about maybe the "red balloon." You could say stuff like, "do you see the RED balloon?" But honestly don't expect to keep your 1yr old's attention very long at all. Make it short and sweet to start out with.

lift the flap books and pop up boooks are good for very small kids because it gives them something to do and they can touch something instead of just having to sit there and listen quietly. he probably wont understand much of the story anyway so books that give him something to do are goo. also Dr. suess's Mr.Brown can moo can you? might be good and it will help teach him animal sounds. when hes a litle older the other Dr. Suess ones would be. and also Litttle Critter books.

I have 3 boys. They are older now so its hard for me to remember what they liked at 1, but it seems like they have always loved the book - Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. It will also teach them their ABC's, and its not too long that a little one will get bored. Also my kids have always loved any Dr. Seuss(spelling?) I'm sure you can find that book at any book store its pretty popular.

I particularly have 22 month previous little lady who has exceeded all skills early except for talking! She began crawling early(like 5 months), broke from a bottle at 8 months, walking at 10 months, bathroom experienced at 20 months yet she would not talk! she will manage to assert something yet chooses now to not. My pediatrician says it truly is because we are no longer making her. i'm a sahm and each and anytime she factors or "uhhhh"s I do exactly it and hence i'm contributing to her laziness of no longer having to assert something. My father and mom wanted to us to consider speech remedy for a lengthy time period besides the undeniable fact that the well being care service laughed.I particularly have a buddy whose little lady is a week youthful than my daughter and he or she would not say something. She jabbers yet no legible words, again her dr says no reason for alarm her older siblings talk for her. he will start up talking, i could wait until eventually atleast 2 or later before I apprehensive. i understand it truly is problematic believe me!

Anything Brainy Baby are really good and Baby Einstein are good too... very colourful and they LOVE them. I read my daughter Brainy Baby Left Brain to encourage Logical Thinking and Right brain to encourage Creative thinking. Also Baby Einstein ABC's books... she knew her shapes, and colours by 13 months, she could count to 10 and knew her ABC's by 18 months and is now 22 months and can read basic words like 'cat', dog', mama, dada, pig, cow, etc... and she is even spelling dog and cat w/ her form ABC's in the tub. She'll count to 10 in English, count to 5 in french and 5 in spanish (sorry just proud)... Anything that is educational is a good choice to read to your child...
Have fun and enjoy!!!
