I refer to the God of the Bible. So often on these boards I am told that God wants us to be tolerant of others' beliefs. Is that true according to the scriptures?

can those on opposite sides of an issue (abortion, eg) be tolerant of each other?

should I be tolerant of those who would teach my children that truth is relative, and it doesn't matter what you believe so long as you are sincere?

we must always uphold the truth of God's word.. but at the same time we should never forget that we have to do it out of love..

truth & love must always go hand in hand

No. In fact one of the commandments is anti tolerance.

The second commandment says:
you shall have no other gods before me.

Fifth and Sixth say:
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Christianity is a religion that encourages it's followers to believe that it is the only true religion. There could be Christians who don't believe this and respect other religions, but that goes against the Biblical principle of "my God is right and yours isn't."

Absolutely not. Christ was certainly not tolerant of those creeps who were selling mite-infested birds to be used as a sin offering - he went out, made a whip and came back and knocked down all the tables, with the coins falling all over the floor;
God tells us to get along with our neighbor, "IF THAT BE POSSIBLE".

Requirement and commandment are basically the same thing. The problem is most people don't understand the meaning of tolerance. Being tolerant means you learn how to co-exist with people who believe differently, it doesn't mean you endorse the way of life of people who believe differently.

I'm certainly not a Biblical scholar....but:
God says "Judge not, lest ye be judged."
He also says "Vengeance is mine."
And He also says "Love they neighbor".

So in my opinion, He does expect us to be tolerant of others. And if others sin, then it is HIS job to punish them...not ours.

If this concept is taken to the most ridiculous extreme, of course, one could say that it means that...when criminals break the law...we do nothing, and wait for God to exact justice on them. But He also says to "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's", which I take to mean that we are expected to obey the laws that the government has made in order to establish a just and fair society. (Not saying we have always accomplished that noble goal, of course...)

i would say that we are to be tolerant of people, but not necessarily of their actions. God doesnt want us to tolerate evil.

Jesus had the power to call down an army of angels and smite the Romans who were pounding nails into him.

But he tolerated them, and forgave them. Because they are his children.

2nd Cor 5
19To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Tolerance but not as we think of it.
There is but one way God has made, Jesus Christ.
He is not willing that any should perish, but that all would come to Him. Of course, not all will.
