I have a male chihuahua and he acts horrible. He barks at us when we walk in the door and he growls at me all the time. And my sisters friend has a female chihuahua who acts the same as our male dog.

All chihuahuas have different attitudes (all dogs have different attitudes). A dog's attitude depends on how it is trained, how it is treated, and its individual personality.

Definitly not. That would be similar to saying all Asian people, or all Indian people, or all black people are the exact same. That said, purebred dogs have often had hundreds of years of breeding to develope certian traits particular to each breed. The trick is learning to properly deal with your dog's predispositions.

In your situation, I would tend to say it is most likely more your fault then the dogs. he obviously has a very strong personality and he is dominating your entire family. I would enlist the services of a dog trainer immediately, or sign him up for some group obedience classes. often little dogs like Chihuahua's can get out of control because despite their small size, they are very dominant dogs with strong personalities. because they are so cute and little, people spoilt them, neglect to train them, and treat them like a stuffed toy. Gets some good books on dog training. But at this point and with your present experience, it sounds like you would both do best from some professional training. I have had dogs all my life and consider myself an experienced dog owneer, and yet getting a trainer for my 2 year old Dalmatian was the best thing that ever happened to us. Give it shot! I am 100% there is still lots of hope for your Chihuahua!

Best of luck!

No all chihuahuas do not have the same attitude. When we come home, my 5 chihuahuas dance around, happy to see us. As for growling at us, we don't allow it so they don't. To be honest it sounds like you are living in their homes and not the other way around.

no I do not . I have a 5 mo .old male and he is very sweet even with kids . He does bark but that is about it . I think it maybe the genetics did you meet his parents? what were the parents like . My dogs parents had the best attitudes and that is one of the reasons I picked him . among other things. I think maybe a behavioralist will be able to help you . good luck.

No, every breed has common characteristics, but each dog can vary. I have a male chihuahua who shows absolutely no aggression towards me, hates men (except for close family members) he does bark when we come home, but it is out of excitement. Bandit will grow @ people when they get near his treats or one of his toys. he doesn't do this to me however.....

They do not all act that way. I have had a female that was a bit trembly, but not nervous or ill natured at all. She seemed to love kids and adults alike and rarely, if ever, growled.
My dad had two males and they were also very good natured.

I have a male chi also and he is a horror to MEN, he loves women and kids but my husband sometimes if he has been diciplined by my husband he will jump on our bed and pee only on my husbands side (lol), he also hates the vet and has been banned from that vet or i have to put a muzzle on my baby ( so I'm lookin' for a new VET) but he males are so dominating and aggressive sometimes you have to just take them to a class!! $$$

Every dog has a different temperament, it doesn't matter what the breed is or what it looks like.

1. It could come genetically
OR
2. It depends how the owner(s) raised it.

It is their instinct.

Although with proper raising and discipline techniques some of the discipline problems can be avoided.
