A golf handicap is calculated using the best 10 scores out of your last 20 rounds played. Its a little more complicated than just calculating how manny strokes over par you shot. It uses a mathematical formula with the course slope and rating. This way you will get what is called a handicap index, wich is used to get a handicap for a specific course. Yuor handicap is diferent on every course, depending on how hard is the course and what Tee box you use. If you calculate the average strokes over par, then wat you gat is a stroke average. The diference between Stroke average and your handicap index is known as Diferential. The lower is your diferetial, the better player you are, regardless of how low is your handicap.
There are manny free handicaps trackers on the web, including Yahoo Handicap tracker. I use myscorecard.com, its not free like yahoo, but its just 9 dollars a year and it offers a lot more.
Hope this answer your question!

USGA, and Royal and Ancient Golf, both determine your handicap by taking 96% of the difference between par and your score. It's that simple, no magic, no 20 scores involved.

To find your handicap. you calculate how many stroke over par you are for 20 rounds. Example: par 72 you get a 84 your handicap would be 12.
