If you can find an additive-free feed for chickens you are fortunate, but the trend is going that way. The general ingredients of all feedstuffs are listed on the label in descending order of weight but very few mills will tell you precisely which ingredients they use. The finest and best value protein, as the hen can use it all and therefore needs less of it, is fishmeal. Grain in the form of wheat is a good diet but more protein and minerals are needed for optimal egg production.
Main common mixture of ingredients (in order of highest content) are corn, Soybean meal, Rice bran, Wheat pollard, Animal by product meal, Rapeseed meal, Fat/oil, and Others/oil seed meal.
A higher percentage of each ingredient is used for broiler chickens than layers by 5 - 10%.

My hens are free range and eat whatever natural foods they can find. I also give them a little scratch feed which is mostly cracked corn and a few other grains. My eggs are better than egglands best.

Yes,they recycle animals in the factory farming industry. They usually put "downer" cows in pet foods or they are fed to other animals(ie pigs, chickens, turkeys,or etc).If you didn't know this,Mad Cow Disease is actually caused by fedding cows back to other cows,it isn't something that just randomly occurs. The hens are often starved,so they will eat anything.Their food will be made up of anything cheap(ie recycled newspapers, poop, other animals not approved for human consumtion).
