Try searching at dodgeinterpid.net.

There's alot of potential issues to cause the oil light, as to the key, unless it's a securkey there's no "recognising" anything, it's simply a mechanical lock, which would probabily be worn or the key is worn.

If it is a securikey the computer may have a loosening connection, the antenna in the column could be at fault, the key itself may be damaged.....

Sorry, I don't have the answer, but I'll be interested to follow this and hopefully see a more informative response... I, too, have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid.

The only reason I'm even responding is that I, too, have had a problem with the oil light. Ever since the car was brand new, if I've left the key in the ignition too long after turning off the car, the check oil light comes on.

Sounds like there's some flaw in the computer which is affecting your much worse than mine. Or a faulty sensor that's finally gone over the edge, something I have still to look forward to.

Has your key been damaged in any way? Do you have a spare, and if so, does the spare have the same problem? I wonder if there's a problem with the chip in the key or the chip reader.

One time, I got in the car and the seat just fell backwards. I took it in and it would have been $150 to fix according to the dealership. So I fixed it myself with a 25c bolt. Turns out that it was later a recall issue.

Seems like every time I take it in to the dealership, they find another recall. I love my Intrepid, but just how poorly was this car built/designed?

My driver's side window no longer rolls down, I don't have the money yet to get it fixed.

But if I were you, I'd have the key issue checked before it just stops accepting your key and you get stranded somewhere.

Best of luck,
James

The issue with the key is probably just a worn ignition switch or even a worn key. Try getting new key made and see if that helps. You may be able fix that problem for $1.50 at Wal-Mart. There's no smart chip or anything in your key, so should be no big deal. As for the oil light, my '03 intrepid has done the same thing a few times. It flickers for a few seconds, then it's off again. Yesterday it happened when I had to stop quickly for a red light. The other time, I had just made a quick turn into a driveway. I think (hope) its a temporary disruption of oil pressure caused by oil sloshing to one side of the pan during quick maneuvers, temporarily uncovering the oil pickup. If your light is flashing more often, it could be a faulty oil pressure sensor. If the light stays on all the time, you probably have low oil pressure. Get it fixed before you need a new engine.
