When you cut your arm, for example, different chemicals are released in your brain. All these hormones rush to your cut, making you feel a sense of relife. People cut because they feel numb on the inside, cutting makes them feel again. It's a really bad way to cope and I don't think anyone on here can tell you exactly how it helps cause everyone's different. I'll be honest it did help me but I would never say you should try it. I hate myselffor doing it. Hope this helps x

Self-harm is so complex, it makes it almost impossible to answer this question directly. The thing with self-harm is that it only helps temporarily, then it can often become a bigger problem in itself. People who self-harm are statistically more likely to commit suicide, but that is not what self-harm is usually about. Self-harm can be related to a number of things: BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder), Depression, anxiety issues, control and/or a feeling of helplessness, bullying, physical/sexual/emotional abuse, following a traumatic event - PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), as a form of self-punishment, as a 'release' mechanism for difficult emotions, for enjoyment, as a pathway through confusion, a cry for help etc etc. There are many more but they are probably the main ones. Self-harm can make a person feel calmer/safer/comforted/relieved/ in control/alive for a little while...I guess that's how you could say it 'helps'.

They feel pain inside, they need to show that pain on their outside. That is a cry for help (yet many do it in private as they feel shame). Self-harming is also their way of excercising control over their lives, when other ways of being able to control their lives are diminishing. There are different types of self-harming- some compulsive, some- not all, are suicidal, although their actions could led to killing themselves accidentally.

Basically, that (BAD, negative reactive response) gives them a feeling of relief - what they do, relieves their inner pressure...

Bullying makes people feel unimportant- so there's the link...
OK? Hope this helps you.

WHY did you ask this question???

It's a coping mechanism. Sometimes people who self harm blame themselves for not being able to stop bullies, even though it's not their fault. Sometimes it's them punishing themselves for what is happening in their lives. It relieves the built up frustration and can prevent things getting out of control. Don't be harsh on whoever it is who does it. They're doing everyhting they can to cope with their situation! x

most people that self harm are teenagers i had a friend who did that the reason people do is because the best was to realise pain is to have pain people try killing themselves over self harm because of bullies or brake-ups or depression they find it more easier hurting themselves then telling people because sometimes people just call them sad or rip it out of them people do have feelings and its the more sensitive people who self harm because they cant take the pressure or the pain sometimes.

In my case it was the frustration of know that if I hit back, I'd have to take some punishment for it. Self harm was a form of stress reliever I suppose.

Self harmers blame themselves for what happens to them, bullying etc, they self harm as a way of punishing themselves. Its an awful way to get the attention that they are crying out for.

What the heck ar you talking about, TV ads that advocate hurting yourself? I don't think so. Self-harming is about feeling helpless and trying to have an effect on SOMETHING. It's a cry for help.

because there is so much pain inside that its a way of releasing it, unless you have ever experienced it, its hard to understand how causing pain on the outside makes inside feel better....it's like when your angry sometimes people thump a wall...it hurts but it helps get that frustration out...it's kind of like that with self harm.
For some people they feel so numb, depressed, dead inside that feeling the pain and even seeing the blood can help them feel alive.
depends on the method of self harm..often it's because they feel they deserve to be hurt.
