I would like to invite a woman in China I am corresponding with to visit Toronto. She will not be coming as a business person or a student, only as a tourist. I hope to allow her to stay with me. I would pay for her airfare. Has anyone actually had any experience with this? What are the steps? How easy and how long is the wait for approval if granted?

Thank you.

My wife is Chinese and she needs a Visa each time we go back to Canada. If you sponsor her, she should have no problem getting a Visa for up to six months.
Just go to the Chinese embassy in Toronto. They will have all the information that you will need. She will probably have to do most of the paperwork, but it's pretty straightforward.
Oh, and it's best to have an E-ticket sent to her, the mail there is not very good sometimes.
Also, make sure that she understands what the weather will be like because she may be in for a big surprise if she arrives during winter. My wife HATES winter in Canada.

She will need both passport from China and a visa from Canada. She will also probably need travel and exit permits from China. It will likely be a complicated and time consuming process. You should contact the feds. Look in the blue pages of the phone book for a number for the immigration department. You could also ask about the exit requirements at the Chinese consulate if there is one in Toronto, but be aware that this could initiate an investigation of your friend back in China so it's probably a bad idea.

This could be a little tricky since technically you cannot sponsor her, your best chance would be to send her a letter of invitation and have her apply at the Canadian Embassy or Consulate to come to Canada as a visitor.

I had a friend who wanted to bring his sister-in-law from China so that she could help his wife while she was pregnant and after she gave birth. She was not able to come, since it could not be determined that she would return at the end of her visa. (This is just one incident, I know of a couple that were approved).

I was a settlement counsellor when I was still in Toronto and my advise is for you to check the CIC website and get as much information as you can....or give a call to Catholic Cross-Cultural Services and they will help guide you through the necessary steps you need in order for you to be able to bring your friend in china in TO. Book and appointment with them.... they're free and I can guarantee you they will be able to give you the best advise you'll need. They've got settlement counsellors who can speak different languages. Their phone number is (416) 757-7010. Also go to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.html.... but this is only basic info's. Like I said, give CCS a call......they're all immigration experts and knows the best way to it.
All the best!!!
