Hello,

Remeron is an anti-depressant, primarily one which blocks the re-uptake of serotonin, a neurotransmitter heavily involved in the brain, GI system and sexual systems. According to psychiatric journal studies, for a majority of people with biological (genetic predispositioned) depression, low levels of serotonin seems to be the basic problem. So, any medication which elevates that level should, in theory, reduce the biologically based symptoms.
Most medications, of any type, psychiatric or otherwise, work effectively in about 70% of people who take an adequate dosage for an adequate period of time. The maximum permitted dose of Remeron is 45 mgs per day, usually given in a single dose at bedtime, since the most common side effect is drowsiness. If the medicine makes you sleepy the next day, and if you just started treatment, that side effects tends to be temporary and will fade away. If this is a long lasting effect, discuss your dosage with your providing doctor.
As knowledge of bipolar disorder grows, many psychiatrists are now treating even the depressed phase with anti-manic medications or mood stabilizers, such as Lithium, Depakote, Tegretol, Topomax, Trileptal, Lamictal, Neurontin, etc. All those except Lithium are also used for treatment of seizure disorders, but have been found to work very well for mood stability. The risk of using an anti-depressant in a person with bipolar disorder is that such drugs can often send the person right into a severe manic episode, whereas the mood stabilizers rarely if ever cause someone to become depressed.
There are other medications used for mood stability, such as Risperdal, Seroquel, Zyprexa, Geodon, etc., which are primarily anti-psychotic drugs which have been found helpful in mood stability, but which can have side effects of their own, including sedation and appetite stimulation.
One of the known side effects of Remeron can be changes in appetite, either to stimulate or depress it. Some people do gain weight while using this drug, though healthy food and drink choices, along with adequate exercise, can overcome this effect and your weight can return to normal. Some people may experience sexual side effects from the serotonin medications (like Remeron, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, etc.), though they tend to be temporary annoyances rather than major problems (for most people).
If you're taking Remeron and are uncomfortable with the effects it's having on you, I would strongly suggest you discuss your concerns with the prescribing physician and ask him/her about possible options for your treatment, including any necessary counseling or therapy (which can be as effective as medication use for many people). Good luc,

I took Mirtazapine for 9 months. It did nothing for me. I still didn't get any sleep and I continued feeling very anxious and depressed. I put on a small amount of weight despite being very careful about what I was eating and going to the gym twice a week.

I came off them after 9 months and just continued with counselling which I find is far more helpful.

I took Mirtazapine a while back.. It made me over sleep in the morning and feel like cr*p whan i woke up. I have taken it a few years ago as well, and it just gave me a feeling of being 'sluggishness' and not feeling well (but i couldn't put my finger on the feeling exactly).
It wasn't nice

I'm a nurse. This medication has benefits for most people with little or no side effects, however every one reacts differently to medicine. Anything is possible and I think you should seek the advice of your physician if you feel you need something different. Those side effects (all of them described with your prescription) is very possible. Look at it this way, is this medication helping me more than working or vice versa. Take care and I hope this helps you.

i took this last year. it didn't help me though. i put on about 5kg in 5 weeks and couldn't stop eating- it increased my appetite so much. i felt quite drowsy at the beginning but that wore off after a few days. when i came off mirtazapine a couple of months ago because it wasn't working, i realised that the drug had made me feel emotionally blank, unreactive kind of dazed out because when i came off it, i had so much energy and my mind was so clear! hope this helps.

I take this (actually, I'm supposed to but I don't) Most anti depressents do cause people to put on loads of weight. Mertazapine is supposed to make you tired at first (you're supposed to take it at night though). I hate mood altering pills, makes me feel like someone else is running my life. Makes me feel disgusting. It made me feel...I didn't like it.
