african american hair needs moisture because of its shape it does not recieve enough when it is chemically processed or damaged by heat. The best way to retain length is avoiding chemical serivces like relaxers as much as possible and minimizing the use of heat. Also putting products such as pure coconut oil on the scalp can help kep your scalp moisturized so that your hair grows. Dont use products containing petroleum, mineral oil, or too much hard to pronounce chemicals on your scalp. http://www.longhaircareforum.com has more great tips and is a community of african american women who are acheiveing waist length hair and longer through educating themselves and each other about the proper hair care.
