Salt, in a small amounts, is a flavor enhancer. It will help bring out the natural flavor of foods and even though it seems a little weird, that's why small measurements of salt are added to sweet as well as savory dishes.

It is a part of self-rising flour:

flour
baking powder
salt

So I think it has something to do with helping the cake to rise.


Also:
Salt slows down all the chemical reactions that are happening in the dough, including calming fermentation activity to a steadier level.
